The Zebulon Record Dedication Sidelights Gov. Luther H. Hodges arrived 15 minutes late for the Lions Club building dedication. He explained he couldn’t get here earlier and that it had been a “rough week” for him. That afternoon he had been in Durham speech-making, and he had come back by his of fice because he had some mail he had to “get out of the way.” Then he stopped by the Mansion to freshen up a bit, and rushed down for the dedication ceremonies. • Governor Hodges, commenting after Lion H. A. Hodge, Jr. had introduced North Carolina’s Chief Executive, said: “I suppose if in Mr. Hodge’s family there had bdfen more of them they would have put an S on them, too. There were nine in my immediate family so we had to make it plural.” • “Of course, I haven’t been here long enough and I haven’t had a chance to see this charming lady, Mrs. Kemp, but I have met this guy,” the Governor said, gestur ing to Lion Frank Kemp, “and how in the world he ever fooled her, I don’t know.” The Governor’s joke: There was a man 68-years-old and his wife had been dead for just about 14 months when he decided to marry a girl 28. He had two daughters, each over 40, and they wanted to keep dad from marrying. So they went to see a neighbor and said, “Mr. Jones, would you mind see ing our daddy about this marry ing. It’s just worrying us to death.” And so the old man did and said, “John, I don’t understand what in the world a man like you—68 years of age—marrying a girl 28. It ain’t even good arithmetic, do esn’t make any sense.” The old man said, “You stay out of this. For 24 years before Mary died ev ery time I opened the bedroom door I smelled liniment, and now I want to smell cologne.” • The Governor’s idea about the present recession period. He said Expert Repair to Any Radio Set JAMES CREECH Radio Sales & Service at Hales Farm Supply Company FISHING WORMS FOR SALE L. E. POOLE Self-Service 24-Hours a day Telephone AN 9-9179 You Nood INSURANCE LET k US TELL YOU ABOUT > IT! All Kindt of INSURANCE FARM LOAMS AMD REAL. ESTATE D. D. Chamblee The Insunnce Man he “thinks that if people would quit talking about how bad things are they would be twice as good as they think they are.” • Governor Hodges is a Rotarian, but he added that he is an hon orary member of the Lions and is “very proud of the honor. I must take my hat off to the many things you (the Lions) have done.” • Even though he arrived too late to eat the delicious baked young chicken dinner (he said he had had his dinner), the Governor did partake of the dessert of ice cream and cake. • The Governor was wearing a navy flannel suit, white shirt and dark four-in-hand tie, according to those sitting near him—al though none of these people seem ed too perceptive. A beautiful white carnation graced the left lapel of his suit. • Mrs. Nelle Kemp’s solos en tranced the guests. Her rendition of two light classics, “A Birthday” and “The Little Shepherd’s Song,” were done flawlessly, with strik ing boldness in the top register, yet never losing their quality. “Bless This House” was also done with excellence and a spirit of prayerfulness. Mrs. Kemp has brought untold honor to the Lions and they express themselves as being deeply appreciative. Can’t fail to mention Mrs. Kemp’s accompanist, Miss Carolyn Hinton. As ever, she played with out error and with ease and grace. • The Harold Green orchestra, augmented with Wakelon School band director Herbert Ireland and ex-directors Sinclair Newman and Alger Batts, never played more beautifully for the dance. They exhibited a very professional qual ity, in both music and their dress of white dinner jackets. • Seems Mrs. Ben Thomas was worried about The Record’s re porter during the Governor’s speech, and remarked to her din ner companions that he must be having a terrible time taking down the speech as fast as the Chief Exe cutive was going. What Mrs. Thom as didn’t know was that the re porter was doing things the easy way that night and had a tape re corder all set up at the Gover nor’s table. But, oh, Mrs. Thomas, the transcribing! That was the job. • Never saw such beautiful and handsome ladies who attended the ceremonies. Two of the prettiest were the mayor’s wife and the wife of the president of the Lions Club. Mrs. Debnam, wife of the mayor, was dressed in a powder blue sheath that had a satin thread running through it outlining a flower design. Across her petite shoulders was thrown a three cornered white woolen shawl. She wore white elbow-length gloves. Mrs. Hinton, wife of the presi dent of the club, was gowned in an Italian silk sheath, navy col ored. She wore no accessories. Mrs. Hodges, who, it was re ported, had planned to accompany the Governor to the ceremonies, called the trip off. No explanation was given. One Lioness wondered if she had mumps. This Lioness possibly had such a,thought be cause mumps were uppermost in her mind, as it has been with a great many of the mothers of Zebu Ion this winter. • Distinguished guests at the Lions Club building dedication were Su perior Court Judge of Wake County William Y. Bickett and Mrs. Bickett, Solicitor of Wake County Superior Court Lester Chalmers and Mrs. Chalmers, Wake County Sheriff Robert Pleas ants, Officer for Wake County Court of Domestic Relations Gra ham Bunn, Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds for the North Carolina State Capitol George Cherry, R. D. Beam, chair Lion Hardin Hinton Accepts Club Keys Lion President Hardin Hinton presented the following speech when he accepted the keys of the Zebulon Lion Club building at the dedication ceremonies, Friday night, March 21. The keys were presented to the president of the club by Lion Thurman Hepler, chairman of the building commit tee. As president of the Zebulon Lions Club, I respectfully accept the keys to this club house. In accepting these keys I do so as a token of the trust committed to us by God, our community, and Lionism. These walls of mortar and stone are erected for a high and sacred purpose. That purpose is service to others through Lionism. This club house stands as a symbol in the midst of the community of Zebulon. A symbol of fraternity of men. A symbol of unselfish dedication of the membership to render civic and national service. In the name of the Zebulon Lions Club, I therefore accept these keys and pledge myself to lead and preside over the work that goes out from this house. These keys stand for a forward program in Zebulon by the Lions. No occasion must be allowed to bar us from carrying through in our march for progress. The building of this house was done voluntarily by the total membership and each of us has the charge laid upon us now to not look back less the fate of Lot’s wife be meted out to us and we become a lump of salt instead of a candle upon a stand. These keys can unlock the doors of need of many desperate people. As we use them to open the doors of this club house, may we enter each time with a fresh determi nation to strive unceasingly to use our resources to make other lives happier. I now accept these keys in tribute to every member’s sacri ficial effort to make our club house a reality. In recognition of every committee, every past president and officer, and those who actually labored to build this house, I glad ly honor these keys. Like the garnishment on an exquisite dessert, it topped off the evening in fine style. • Overheard some Lions and their spouses from out of towh com ment that “the Zebulon Lions really know how to do things.” Dog Vaccination Dates Set; May 1 - April 31 The State law provides that an opportunity be given all dog own ers each year between April 1 and May 31 to have their dogs vac cinated against rabies.
